Production and Technology site A³
Progress is tradition here: In 1897 the test run of the engine named after Rudolf Diesel started in the engine factory Augsburg-Nuremberg (MAN). This is where the first jet engine also started. At the time the branches of mechanical and electrical engineering, which were of great importance for the textile industry, merged ever more to become the present guarantee for success, Mechatronics, supported by transfer offices of universities and networks, like the "mechatronik-net e.V." (formerly "BKM - Bayerisches Kompetenznetzwerk Mechatronik"), or the application centres "iwb" and "FZG". The Ariane carrier rocket, engines for ocean liners, the Eurofighter, the Airbus family and industrial robots find their building elements in A³.
By virtue of its broad spectrum of Mechatronics competences, the A³ economic area offers the ideal site for future-oriented approaches to holistic development and integrated product and process design.
The core branches
The following regional focal points crystallised from a survey among experts in the competence field of Mechatronics:

• Drive technology
• Automation & Robotics
• Aviation and Aerospace Technology
• Efficient Production Systems
• Classical Mechanical Engineering /
Plant Engineering
• New Materials
Technology leaders in the core sectors
The Network
You will find a closely-knit network of cooperation partners, R&D service providers and relevant institutions in the Augsburg economic area.

Sector network "mechatronik-net e.V."
The competence network for Mechatronics across Bavaria is situated in Augsburg. The association offers to all who are involved in the development and application of Mechatronics a comprehensive information platform in an inter-disciplinary network, competent contact persons, cooperation agencies across technologies and branches and an overview of the current state of research, development and services.
Details

Application centres
The Augsburg site has got a powerful potential for technology transfer in the fields of Mechatronics, production technology and materials with the production-technical application centre „iwb“ in Augsburg, the "FZG Forschungsstelle für Zahnräder und Getriebebau" and the "AMU Anwenderzentrum für Material- und Umweltforschung".

Universities
Knowledge and technology transfer from the universities is an asset in Augsburg! The University of Applied Sciences Augsburg and the University of Augsburg feature numerous faculties and institutes for the field of Mechatronics, like for instance the Competence Centre Mechatronics c2m, the classical faculties of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, but also the faculties for efficient production in the field of Business Administration.
Manpower

The University of Augsburg as well as the University of Applied Sciences Augsburg ensure scientific manpower succession. The University of Applied Sciences Augsburg features a very strong engineering-scientific orientation with special focus on Mechatronics: Mechatronics course of studies, Master in Mechatronic Systems, Mechatronics Competence Centre.
The chamber of industry and commerce "IHK Schwaben" places emphasis on Mechatronics training and as a forerunner in Bavaria has established two highly demanded courses of study in Mechatronics training, i.e. "Mechatronics Foreman" and the "State-certified Mechatronics Technician" in addition to the "Mechatronics Craftsman" and the "Mechatronics Specialist".
