In 2021, 13% (34,388) of all employees had no vocational training qualifications, 62.7% (166,053) had a recognised vocational qualification and 15.8% had academic qualifications (41,882). The proportion of academics in the Augsburg economic region is above the Bavarian average and has improved by 0.5 per cent compared to the previous year.

Since 2019, university medicine has rounded off the wide range of academic programmes in the Augsburg region. With over 6,700 students at Augsburg University of Applied Sciences (winter semester 21/22) from 70 nations, it is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Bavarian Swabia. The university has a total of 585 students (winter semester 21/22) from abroad (8.7 per cent).

The University of Augsburg also has a lot to offer. In the winter semester 21/22, a total of 20,150 students were enrolled at the University of Augsburg, of which 1,721 students (8.5 per cent) were from abroad. Around 125 projects are currently being funded by the German Research Foundation and around 17 by the EU on which researchers at the University of Augsburg are working. The University of Augsburg is globally networked through co-operation agreements with more than 220 universities in over 57 countries.
