Expertise from local research partners German Aerospace Centre (DLR) – Centre for Lightweight-Production-Technology (ZLP)

The ZLP Augsburg conducts research into the automation and holistic optimisation of production processes for lightweight structures. The focus is on the robot-assisted manufacture of components made from fibre-reinforced composites for the aerospace industry. The aim is to develop technologies for cost-effective, robust production of high quality.

A flexible infrastructure, unique in Europe, enables research on a full-scale basis: in collaboration with industry, a wide variety of production processes can be developed in line with specific needs and assessed for their suitability for automation. Through holistic research across the entire process chain, the ZLP is able to respond to the specific requirements of the respective industry. This facilitates the transition of innovations into practical application.

Key areas of research:

  • Textile and Infusion Technology
  • Thermoplastic Processing
  • Production-Integrated Quality Assurance
  • Assembly and Joining Technologies
  • Robotics for Fibre Composite Manufacturing

Science and industry working hand in hand at the ZLP

The Centre for Lightweight-Production-Technology (ZLP) research institute in Stade and Augsburg was founded in 2009 and has been an independent site of the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) since 2011. Using unique, multifunctional large-scale facilities, the ZLP develops strategies for manufacturing lightweight structures cost-effectively, in an environmentally responsible manner and to a high standard of quality. In doing so, process steps are investigated, integrated and replicated on an industrial scale using the appropriate technical infrastructure.

At the ZLP’s Augsburg site, academia and industry work together to develop new processes, making it easier for innovations to be implemented on an industrial scale. The ZLP Augsburg is divided into five research groups:

  • Flexible Automation Systems
  • Assembly and Joining Technologies
  • Production-Integrated Quality Assurance
  • Processes and Automation
  • Production Processes Technical Centre

Among other things, the ZLP is also a member of the TEA network of transfer centres in the Augsburg region, which is open to cooperation with businesses.
